Apple's Latest Setback: iOS 19 and Smart Home Hub Delays

Published March 10, 2025

Recently, Apple introduced updated models of its MacBook Air, iPad Air, and Mac Studio, showcasing the latest in their hardware line. However, the excitement around these launches has been somewhat diminished by the announcement that significant updates to Siri, specifically its personalized AI features, have been postponed, impacting Apple's plans going forward.

According to reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the forthcoming iOS 19 update will not focus on new features but rather on enhancing existing capabilities of Apple Intelligence. This decision comes in light of multiple delays within the company concerning AI developments. As a result, the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is expected to be less eventful than in previous years, as Apple aims to fulfill commitments made in the past.

However, not all attention will be diverted from exciting new technologies. The Vision Pro, which is anticipated to take center stage during WWDC, will showcase visionOS 3, a comprehensive update for its augmented reality and virtual reality headset. Despite this, insiders report there will not be any new headset announcements this year. Future models, including a second-generation Vision Pro and a more affordable variant, are under development but are not likely to hit the market anytime soon. The current iteration of Apple Intelligence is set to be integrated into the Vision Pro with an update to visionOS 2.4.

Delays Impacting Smart Home Hub

Last year, Apple was rumored to be working on a new smart home hub aimed at competing with options like the Google Nest Hub and Amazon Echo Show. Originally slated for release in March, this device has experienced delays due to the postponement of Siri's more personalized features, which are vital for the hub's contextual functionalities.

Currently, Apple is internally testing this smart home hub with a small group of employees to gather feedback and refine the product before its eventual launch. However, a specific timeline for its release remains unclear. Speculators suggest that the launch might not occur until 2025, and some even believe it could push into 2026 if the enhancements to Siri's AI capabilities are not finalized promptly.

Looking ahead, the latter half of 2025 may prove challenging for Apple, as the company will be preparing for the anticipated launch of the iPhone 17 series. This lineup is rumored to include the new iPhone 17 Air alongside ongoing efforts to deliver the promised enhancements related to Apple Intelligence. The AI technologies initially expected for the iPhone 16 series will now potentially debut with the iPhone 17, creating a complex situation for the tech giant.
