Business Insider's Chief Editor Backs the Integrity of Neri Oxman Plagiarism Reports

Published January 8, 2024

In a recent communication with his staff, Nicholas Carlson, the Global Editor-in-Chief of Business Insider, defended the publication of two investigative pieces about Neri Oxman. The articles in question brought to light instances of plagiarism in academic papers authored by Oxman, who is a prominent academic figure now heading a new startup. Carlson informed his team of the decision to stand by the stories, emphasizing the importance of journalistic integrity and independence.

Uncovering Plagiarism

The reports released by Business Insider made connections between Oxman's work and previously identified plagiarism in the work of Claudine Gay. The deeper dig into Oxman's writing revealed uncredited excerpts from Wikipedia, textbooks, and other scholarly materials. Despite the serious nature of these accusations, Oxman and her husband Bill Ackman have not refuted the factual basis of the reports.

Addressing Concerns Over Journalistic Practice

While there have been noises around the reporting methods and intentions behind the article's release, Carlson reassures his team and readers that the motivations were rooted in truth-seeking and accountability. Acknowledging the inquiry by Axel Springer, the owner company of Business Insider, into the processes leading up to the publication, Carlson welcomed the review signalling his confidence in the newsroom's adherence to high editorial standards.
