Google Teases Upcoming AI-Powered Smart Glasses
TL;DR: Google has launched Gemini 2.0 and hinted at the arrival of AI-powered smart glasses through Project Astra. A limited number of testers are currently using the prototypes, which can identify their surroundings. More information will be shared soon.
On Wednesday, Google announced Gemini 2.0, the latest version of their AI companion. Along with it came an exciting teaser for a new pair of AI-powered smart glasses.
Project Astra: The Future of Smart Glasses
Through a recent YouTube video on its official channel, Google hinted at the potential release of smart glasses known as Project Astra. The video features an individual exploring their neighborhood and interacting with an AI assistant built into the glasses.
The product currently exists in the research prototype stage, as detailed by Bibo Xu, a product manager at Google DeepMind. He noted that a select group of users, part of the Trusted Tester program, are evaluating the prototype.
What to Expect from the Smart Glasses
Google's Trusted Tester program allows participants to experience products that may never reach the market. Although this might lead some to think that Project Astra may not be released, Xu assured that there will be more news regarding the glasses soon.
The demonstration in the video revealed how the glasses work: they are equipped with sensors in the lenses that allow them to recognize objects in the user's surroundings. For instance, when the user asks questions like "What is this park on my left?", the AI assistant uses data from these sensors to provide accurate answers that the user can hear.
