Elon Musk Expresses Disdain for OpenAI's GPT-4o Showcase

Published May 14, 2024

In a recent demonstration of OpenAI's latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-4o, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made it clear that he was less than impressed with what he saw. Musk, who has had a history of involvement with and subsequent distancing from OpenAI, found the demonstration cringeworthy.

Musk's History with OpenAI

Elon Musk, despite being one of the co-founders, parted ways with OpenAI in 2018. Since then, his views on the company's developments have been openly critical. His latest remarks about their newest AI model are consistent with this trend. The tech mogul has accused the company, in the past, of having a biased approach in their technology and even filed a lawsuit alleging they strayed from their original mission post the Microsoft deal.

GPT-4o Demonstration

OpenAI introduced GPT-4o on a Monday, showcasing enhancements in speech and visual capabilities of the AI. Designed to function as a digital assistant, GPT-4o's ability for users to engage through both speech and visuals has drawn comparisons to the AI featured in the movie 'Her'. However, Elon Musk was quick to ridicule the update through social media, likening it to an AI girlfriend concept, which he found unsettling.

Musk's Continuing Ventures in AI

Musk remains an active figure in AI development through his own ventures. He has set up a rival AI company called xAI and introduced an AI-powered chatbot. In response to comments about OpenAI's release, Musk announced an impending 'major upgrade' to his AI chatbot codenamed Grok. This suggests an ongoing competition between his initiatives and those of OpenAI.

Despite the back-and-forth on social media and Musk's critical stance, neither OpenAI nor Musk's representatives immediately responded to comments when contacted.
