The Double-Edged Influence of AI on Student Creativity in Education

Published February 2, 2024

In schools nationwide, educators are wrestling with the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT, debating whether they serve as academic aids or impediments. Research into the matter reveals a complex picture where AI can both bolster and hinder student creativity.

AI's Impact on Creative Thinking

A recent study which included scholars from esteemed institutions like the University of South Carolina, UC Berkeley, and Emerson College sought to understand AI's effect on student creativity. The research involved college students brainstorming uses for a paper clip, first unassisted and later with the help of AI. Findings indicate that while AI can swiftly supply ideas and stimulate the creative process, it also poses risks to students' independent thinking abilities and confidence.

The Pros and Cons of AI-Assisted Brainstorming

When integrating AI into brainstorming sessions, students reported increased idea diversity and detail, recognizing AI's value in initiating creative thought. However, some expressed concerns about over-reliance on AI, fearing it might stifle their own thinking. The research suggests that AI-generated ideas may tend to lack originality and suffer from repetitiveness since AI often rehashes existing concepts.

Fostering Creativity Alongside AI

The study underscores the importance of cultivating independent creative skills before introducing AI. Just as learning long division precedes calculator use, practicing creativity without AI strengthens students’ belief in their abilities. Additionally, critical stages of the creative process such as problem definition and idea evaluation still require significant human input, with AI offering less assistance in these areas.

Challenges and Future Research

Despite the benefits AI brings to education, maintaining a human-centric approach is essential. Concerns such as content ownership, plagiarism, and the dissemination of inaccurate information demand responsible use of AI in educational settings. Further research is needed to fully understand AI's impact on aspects of creativity like agency and confidence, as well as other stages of the creative process. Ethical considerations will be central to ensuring AI positively coexists with human creativity in education.
