ChatGPT Users Now Rival Google Chrome Users
Jakarta – The generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform, ChatGPT, has become increasingly popular, recording the highest number of users globally. The user base of ChatGPT has now reached a level where it competes directly with Google Chrome.
According to reports, the number of ChatGPT users has surged to 3.7 billion worldwide, surpassing Google Chrome, which has approximately 3.45 billion users. This significant milestone highlights ChatGPT's rapid growth.
In terms of growth metrics, ChatGPT has seen a 17.2% increase in users on a monthly basis and an impressive 115% increase in traffic year-over-year. This upward trajectory can be attributed to the rebranding of its website in 2024 when the parent company, OpenAI, changed its web address from the subdomain chat.openai.com to the primary domain chatgpt.com.
A notable spike in traffic for ChatGPT was observed in May 2024, when it recorded 2.2 billion visits in a single month, indicating a sustained trajectory of growth since then.
Since its debut in November 2022, ChatGPT has gained widespread recognition. OpenAI has continuously refined the platform, enhancing features and introducing additional applications to maintain user engagement.
Recently, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Search—an internal search engine feature positioned as a competitor to Google. This new feature enables users to receive direct answers to their inquiries, including sports scores, current news, and stock prices, enhancing its utility.
However, while generative AI tools like ChatGPT offer services similar to traditional industries they seek to complement or replace, such as Google Search, it is important to note that the web-based version of ChatGPT still relies on browsers for its functionality.
For comparison, Google Chrome boasts a solid market share with around 35.4 billion users in 2024, reflecting an annual growth rate of 45.35% over the past five years. This illustrates Chrome’s continued popularity amidst the rise of AI platforms.
In other news, OpenAI has also acquired the domain name Chat.com, but details regarding its intended use remain unknown at this time.
