Apple Upgrades: New Features in iOS 18.2 with Siri Integration of ChatGPT
Apple has officially launched new versions of its systems: iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2. These updates introduce a second set of features for Apple Intelligence across all three platforms. New tools such as Image Wand, an image generation-focused utility called Image Playground, and Genmoji are now available, alongside visual intelligence features that utilize camera controls.
Among these updates, the integration of ChatGPT with the voice assistant Siri stands out as one of the most anticipated artificial intelligence (AI) features. However, the sudden increase in users testing the service led to a temporary failure in OpenAI’s systems.
Support for Chinese Version Coming in April
To install and use Apple Intelligence, users will need to have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer model. The geographic availability has expanded from the original U.S. English to include regional variations in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. Additionally, users can expect Chinese support starting in April next year. Users in Hong Kong who wish to experience ChatGPT can change their language and region settings to English (US) and United States, respectively. They must also set Siri's language to 'English (US)'. Finally, by enabling a virtual private network (VPN) and selecting a U.S. IP address, users can access ChatGPT without needing an OpenAI account.
ChatGPT Outage of 5 Hours
It is notable that social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Threads encountered various issues, with parent company Meta acknowledging technical problems on social media X. Coinciding with Apple’s iOS 18.2 update, ChatGPT experienced a global outage lasting five hours before systems returned to normal. The significant demand on data center computing power cannot be overlooked. Reports have surfaced that Apple may collaborate with Broadcom to create the first server chip specifically designed for AI operations, with hopes for production by the end of 2026.
