South African University Students Utilize AI Tools for Enhanced Learning

Published November 20, 2023

As AI continues to advance, concerns about its impact on various sectors, including higher education, have grown. One AI system, ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, has been particularly noteworthy, stirring discussions about the potential negative effects of AI-generated content on academic integrity. Many people fear AI's capacities could lead to unethical practices in creative and academic fields due to its ability to autonomously generate human-like text and imagery.

ChatGPT, which operates based on machine learning, is designed to process vast data, identify patterns, and provide responses that mimic natural human conversation. This has led to its increasing use among university students, prompting an inquiry into how such AI tools are being utilized within the academic sphere.

Conducting a Study

In an effort to understand AI's role in students' academic routines, a group of media and communication academics conducted an online survey across five South African universities. The survey gathered insights from 1,471 students, predominantly first-year humanities undergraduates, about their usage of AI tools, focusing not only on ChatGPT, but a variety of AI-powered technologies.

Upon analyzing the survey results, the researchers concluded that the current moral panic related to generative AI's use in academia might be unnecessary. Instead of leaning heavily on ChatGPT, students were found to use a wide range of AI tools to support their learning processes. They employed these tools for tasks such as idea generation, essay writing assistance, and concept clarification when they faced difficulties in understanding academic material.

Understanding AI Tool Usage

The survey revealed that students preferred laptops and smartphones for their academic work and frequently used AI tools like translation and reference managers. Over 46.5% utilized writing aides to enhance their writing style for assignments, and more than 80% benefited from tools akin to Grammarly for English language corrections.

Notably, less than half of the participants had used ChatGPT to address essay questions. While recognizing the risk of plagiarism and learning impingement, many students also expressed that they did not exploit these tools improperly. A vast majority found such digital resources effective for various academic purposes, including better comprehension of academic texts, study aids, and a means for non-native English speakers to refine their writing skills.

Active Learning through AI

The study highlighted how students actively use AI for an engaged learning experience. Engaged learning is a hands-on approach where students take charge of their education, developing skills and ideas actively. AI tools enable students to personalize their learning to their individual needs, effectively serving as a personalized online 'tutor' to help them understand complex concepts.

While there is justified concern over AI potentially compromising educational assessments and integrity, incorporating the student perspective is crucial in crafting new learning and assessment strategies in higher education.
