Tesla's Energy Segment Boom Leads to Leadership Changes

Published October 25, 2024

Electric vehicle powerhouse Tesla Inc. has recently announced the promotion of Micheal Snyder to the role of Vice President of Energy and Charging. This change comes amid a significant leadership reshuffle at the company, coinciding with impressive performance in its energy segment during the third quarter.

Details of the Promotion: Micheal Snyder shared news of his promotion on LinkedIn. He has been with Tesla since 2014 and previously held the position of Senior Director for the Megapack product. The Megapack is a high-capacity energy storage solution developed by Tesla, complementing its residential energy storage product known as Powerwall.

During the third quarter of 2023, Tesla’s energy generation and storage revenue reached $2,376 million, reflecting a remarkable 52% growth compared to the same quarter last year. The energy division also achieved a record gross margin of 30.5%, while Powerwall deployments hit an all-time high.

Tesla operates a Megafactory in Lathrop, California, which has the capability to produce 10,000 Megapack units annually. Additionally, a new Megafactory is being developed in Shanghai, with plans to begin Megapack shipments by the first quarter of 2025.

Looking ahead, Tesla forecasts that it will deploy approximately double the energy storage capacity of last year, estimating around 29.4 GWh for the full year of 2024.

Further Leadership Changes: Snyder's promotion is part of a broader trend within Tesla, with several other executives also receiving promotions in recent weeks. Omead Afshar has been elevated to vice president overseeing sales and manufacturing, with top executives based in North America and Europe now reporting to him. Additionally, Ashok Elluswamy has transitioned from Director of Autopilot Software to Vice President of AI Software.

Furthermore, Milan Kovac, previously Director of Optimus and Autopilot Engineering, is now Vice President of Optimus. Wes Morrill, who led engineering for the Cybertruck, has been appointed Senior Director of Engineering-Reliability, Test, and Analysis.

Tesla experienced a significant workforce reduction earlier this year, leading to the departure of several senior executives, including the former Senior Director of Charging Infrastructure Rebecca Tinucci, AI Manager Paril Jain, Director of New Product Introduction Daniel Ho, Senior Vice President of Powertrain and Energy Engineering Drew Baglino, and Vice President of Public Policy and Business Development Rohan Patel.

Since that time, the company has undergone a substantial restructuring of its leadership and operational teams.

Stock Market Reaction: Following Tesla's favorable third-quarter results, the company’s stock surged nearly 22% in value on Thursday, closing the day at $260.48. To date, Tesla's shares have seen a 4.9% increase this year, according to market data analysis.
