North Carolina Advocates for AI in Education, Provides Use Guidelines

Published January 16, 2024

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is guiding educators on the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms, positioning North Carolina as the fourth state to provide official directives on the matter. Teachers and students are encouraged to utilize AI technologies such as ChatGPT across all K-12 grade levels. State Superintendent Catherine Truitt emphasized the growing importance of AI in society and the need to prepare students to use these technologies effectively.

Prudent AI Integration in NC Education

AI is becoming more prevalent in certain North Carolina school systems, though there's still uncertainty among educators about how to recognize AI-assisted student work. Some districts have even blocked AI websites. The NCDPI advocates responsible use of AI, which includes evaluating and verifying AI-generated information and revising AI outputs to ensure originality and accuracy. A specially developed 'EVERY' framework by NCDPI and AI for Education outlines ethical implementation practices for AI in educational settings.

Empowering Teachers and Students with AI

According to NCDPI, AI can augment the teaching process by managing administrative tasks and analyzing student progress. Students may also benefit from AI's capabilities, such as translating languages or assisting with writing through voice-to-text technologies. These tools can be especially beneficial for students facing physical challenges that impede traditional writing methods.

The Future of AI in NC Classrooms

The extent of AI's integration in education will depend on the proficiency of teachers and students in using these tools. Time constraints and existing responsibilities have limited teachers' ability to learn AI technologies. As a response, NCDPI is providing resources for educators to educate themselves and their students about AI. The department's guide, offering tools and courses for educator training, will undergo periodic updates.

NCDPI is also reframing the notion of AI in education, challenging the idea that AI assistance in writing equates to cheating. The goal is to teach students to enhance chatbot-generated content and properly cite AI contributions. Meanwhile, the department advises caution with AI detectors due to their potential inaccuracies and advocates for traditional methods of authorship verification.
