Elon Musk took to clarifying speculation on Friday, concerning his latest venture into the world of artificial intelligence with his startup called xAI. Contrary to circulating reports, Musk assured the public that xAI is not in the process of raising any funds presently. This comes in response to circulating narratives suggesting that the company might be in line for a cash injection worth as much as $6 billion.
Dispelling the Rumors
A recent claim was made in the Financial Times, which triggered discussions around xAI's valuation - with figures rumored to reach up to $20 billion in the wake of the alleged fundraising. Musk has openly rebutted these reports, firmly stating, "xAI is not raising capital and I have had no conversations with anyone in this regard." This instance marks Musk's third public disavowal of fundraising reports for xAI in a span of just two months.
Investment Prospects and Company Developments
Despite the rejection of current fundraising claims, it has been reported that Musk may be exploring potential funding from global investors for xAI. This spans a diverse group that includes sovereign wealth funds from the Middle East, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, and even family offices based out of Hong Kong. Notably, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal is known to be an investor in Musk's other business ventures and had a role in the $44 billion acquisition of a prominent social media platform.
Elon Musk, one of the co-creators of OpenAI, started xAI in the early part of 2023 after having resigned from the board of OpenAI in 2018. His concerns regarding AI safety have been a driving force behind his new venture. xAI has introduced an AI chatbot named Grok, positioned as a competitor to well-known AI initiatives like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google Bard from Alphabet Inc.
Though Grok may not yet be on par with its competitors in performance, it differentiates itself by processing real-time information from X and possessing a unique personality. Currently exclusive to X Premium+ subscribers, Grok is behind a paywall, costing $16 monthly or $168 annually.
