Bengaluru AI Startup Sarvam Raises Rs 340 Crore in Funding Round
Bengaluru-based AI startup, Sarvam, has successfully secured funding of approximately Rs 340 crore ($41 million) in what is considered a significant early-stage investment for the firm. This marks a notable achievement as the company steps out of its initial stealth mode and positions itself within the AI sector.
Sarvam AI's Ambitious Beginnings
Founded just five months back by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, Sarvam AI has kept its workings under wraps. With notable experience in digital infrastructure and AI domains, the founders bring a wealth of knowledge to the startup. Raghavan, with his expertise from his tenure at the Unique Identification Authority of India, and Kumar's insights from AI4Bharat, provide the company with a robust foundation for growth.
Targeting Generative AI Development
Sarvam's aspirations include developing an end-to-end 'full-stack' generative AI (GenAI), extending from innovative AI model training to deployment for enterprise applications. The strategy aims to promote GenAI usage across India's enterprises, assisting businesses in adapting to and leveraging AI technologies.
The startup's intended AI models are designed to enhance Indian language support and voice-first interfaces, prioritizing collaboration with local enterprises on domain-specific AI models. Additionally, Sarvam aims for significant societal contributions by integrating GenAI into India's established digital frameworks for public service applications.
Founders' Vision and Strategic Backing
Raghavan, reflecting on his experiences, emphasizes the substantial value creation through foundational innovation and broad-scale deployment. Khosla, the founder of Khosla Ventures, highlights Sarvam's strategic imperative to cultivate AI capabilities tailored for the Indian context. The funding round's leading players include Lightspeed, Peak XV Partners, and Khosla Ventures itself, with Khosla acknowledging his prior investment in OpenAI as an influential factor.
