Merger Completed Between AI Chipmakers Rebellions and Sapeon Korea

Published December 2, 2024

Rebellions and Sapeon Korea, two innovative artificial intelligence chipmakers in South Korea, have officially completed their merger process, creating a new integrated company. This move is seen as a significant step in strengthening their market presence in the rapidly evolving AI chip sector.

The merger was finalized following the definitive agreement signed by Rebellions CEO Park Sung-hyun and SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang. This agreement was signed at Rebellions' office located in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, marking a new era for both companies.

The newly merged company will retain the name Rebellions and is anticipated to have a corporate valuation of approximately 1.3 trillion won (about $927.9 million). Park Sung-hyun will continue to lead the company as its CEO.

The merger comes roughly six months after the two companies announced their strategic integration plan. This plan aims to enhance their competitiveness in the global AI chip market. Since Rebellions originated as a fabless AI chip startup established in 2020, and Sapeon Korea was an AI chip processor under SK Telecom, this merger brings together young innovation with established infrastructure.

As part of their future strategy, the newly formed Rebellions plans to expand its operations into various international markets, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and others. They aim to achieve this growth alongside their strategic investors, such as SK Telecom and SK hynix.

Additionally, the company will focus on gaining a prominent position in PyTorch, an open-source machine learning framework. They will also leverage their chiplet technology, which allows different types of chips to be packaged together, to respond effectively to global AI supply needs.

CEO Park has expressed confidence in the new company's potential, noting that the reshaping of the global AI semiconductor market has begun with the dominance of companies like Nvidia. He is committed to leading the new entity with a sense of responsibility aimed at enhancing South Korea's AI chip industry.
