Anthropic Rolls Out Claude AI Across Europe and Seeks Additional Funding

Published May 14, 2024

Following OpenAI's unveiling of their newest GPT large language model, their leading competitor in the United States' generative AI space, Anthropic, has revealed plans to broaden its reach. On Monday, Anthropic announced that Claude, its AI assistant, is now operational throughout Europe and provides multilingual support, extending its services to French, German, Italian, and Spanish speakers through various platforms including Claude.ai, its iOS application, and the business-oriented Team Plan.

Anthropic Gears Up for Rapid Growth

Anthropic's expansion into the European market is a key step in its growth strategy. This move follows the API's extension to Europe, encouraging developers to adopt and integrate its AI models. These efforts mirror the company's ambition for accelerated expansion. So far, Anthropic has secured close to $8 billion with a post-money valuation of $18.4 billion, having raised over $7 billion of this in just the previous year.

New Funding on the Horizon

Daniela Amodei, Co-founder and President of Anthropic, has hinted at the company's endeavors to raise more primary capital, on top of its already substantial financial base, during a correspondence with TechCrunch. Although details are under wraps, the pursuit of further funding is underway. Anthropic boasts an impressive roster of almost 60 current investors, including technology giants such as Amazon, Google, Salesforce, SAP, and Zoom. Alameda and FTX have also executed plans to divest their shares valued at $884 million as part of a larger secondary transaction amid bankruptcy proceedings.

The Hunt for Investor Confidence Continues

Amidst a fiercely competitive and investor-friendly landscape for AI enterprises, Anthropic is not alone in its quest for financial backing. Mistral AI, another notable large language model (LLM) contender, is reported to be in talks with investors for nearly $600 million funding at a $6 billion valuation. Remarkably, Softbank has yet to stake a claim in any of these companies, suggesting it could potentially emerge as a financier in future rounds.

Market Reception: A Balancing Act

While investors display great enthusiasm for generative AI, consumer response seems more tempered. Anthropic's own iOS app had a modest uptake following its May launch, raising questions about the sustainability of AI's current popularity. Nevertheless, Amodei asserts that the focus on enterprise and work applications, including the recent debut of the Claude Team plan, showcases the company's commitment to a seamless user experience across personal and professional domains, akin to messaging platforms like Slack.

Embracing European Regulations

Europe's stringent stance on AI safety and regulation, particularly with the AI Act earlier this year, presents a unique challenge. Amodei is confident in Anthropic's founding principles of safety and compliance, including adherence to the EU's GDPR. Although the AI Act's full implementation is pending, Anthropic plans to remain proactive in the dialogue surrounding regulation. Part of its commitment to safety includes research into mechanistic interpretability, aiming to demystify AI model processes and promote safer AI behaviors.

Anthropic's European Workforce and Future Plans

With 40 employees in its London office and several contractors across Europe, Anthropic is poised for further expansion, especially with its eyes set on opening a new office in Dublin.
