Google Expands AI Features for Search
On Wednesday, Google made a significant announcement regarding the expansion of its AI Overviews feature. This update means that AI Overviews will be available for more types of queries and to users all around the world, including those who are not logged into Google accounts. In addition to this, Google introduced a new feature called "AI Mode," which acts like a chatbot.
AI Mode is similar to other popular competitors such as Perplexity and ChatGPT Search. However, access to this feature will initially be limited to subscribers of Google One AI Premium. Users can enable AI Mode through the Labs section of the Search interface.
This new feature generates AI-based answers to user queries, incorporating links for further reading based on Google's vast search index. "What we're finding from people who are using AI Overviews is that they're really bringing different kinds of questions to Google," explained Robby Stein, the Vice President of Product for the Search team. He noted that users are now posing more complex questions that may have been more challenging to answer in the past.
In conjunction with these updates, Google is also enhancing the AI Overviews capability, leveraging its latest Gemini 2.0 model. This improvement aims to provide better responses for queries involving math, coding, and reasoning. With these advancements, Google hopes to make its search functionality more helpful and user-friendly for diverse needs.
