Apple Set to Introduce New AI Features with iOS 18.2 in Early December
Apple is gearing up to unveil its next suite of Apple Intelligence features in early December. According to industry insider Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the upcoming iOS 18.2 update, which promises substantial improvements, is slated for release during the week of December 2.
If all goes as planned without any delays, iOS 18.2 will introduce exciting new features. These include the integration of the ChatGPT chatbot, a new custom emoji feature called Genmoji, and the Image Playground application.
In addition to the iOS 18.2 update, Gurman mentions that there will be a major enhancement to Apple Intelligence in April with iOS 18.4, which could feature an upgraded Siri. This new version of Siri may be able to utilize users' data to answer questions based on the information presented on their screens.
Among the highlights of iOS 18.2 is Genmoji, a creative feature combining 'generative AI' with emojis. Users can create custom emojis by simply typing a description; for example, "T-rex wearing a tutu on a surfboard." Furthermore, users can personalize their Genmoji by choosing a photo of a friend or family member.
The Image Playground app will allow users to generate fun images within various applications such as Messages, Notes, Keynote, and Pages. Another exciting feature, called Image Wand, will enhance note-taking by transforming rough sketches into polished images. By circling an empty area, the Image Wand will generate an image using relevant context from the nearby content.
In December, the Writing Tools, first introduced in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 on October 28, will receive additional features. Users will be able to specify changes to their text, such as rewording a dinner party invitation to sound more poetic or injecting dynamic action verbs into a résumé.
The integration of the ChatGPT chatbot will allow users to access its extensive knowledge base directly through Writing Tools and Siri. This functionality will enable seamless use of its image and document comprehension abilities without needing to switch applications.
According to Gurman, besides support for U.S. English, various English dialects will also be introduced with the iOS 18.2 release in December, while support for the European Union will follow in the April update.
