OpenAI Introduces $200 Monthly Subscription for Its New Reasoning Model
OpenAI is making significant updates to its popular ChatGPT chatbot, including launching a new premium plan. This plan, named ChatGPT Pro, will cost $200 per month and provide users with exclusive access to the latest version of its reasoning model, o1, which was previously in a limited preview.
The full release of the o1 model, initially dubbed ‘Strawberry’, is also being rolled out today for users subscribed to ChatGPT Plus and Team services. Meanwhile, users in the Enterprise and Edu categories can expect access to the new model starting next week.
ChatGPT Pro subscribers will enjoy unlimited use of the OpenAI o1 model, as well as additional features such as GPT-4o and Advanced Voice mode. Notably, the o1 model provided to Pro users will operate using more computational power, enhancing its ability to tackle complex queries effectively.
For those who do not wish to upgrade, OpenAI will still maintain its Plus tier, which is priced at $20 a month. This lower tier offers early access to new features and allows access to various models, though it does not include the more advanced o1 version.
According to reports, OpenAI plans to introduce a series of new features and products in a period they refer to as “shipmas.” Among these announcements will be the highly anticipated text-to-video AI tool named Sora, along with various enhancements and updates to the platform.
The upgraded o1 model is said to be faster, more powerful, and more accurate than its predecessor, known as o1-preview. It shows improved performance in areas such as coding and mathematical tasks and is able to deliver reasoning-based responses to image inputs. OpenAI has aimed to make this model more concise, which should contribute to quicker response times as compared to the previous version.
Furthermore, the company plans to incorporate features like web browsing and file uploads in future updates to ChatGPT, although specific timelines for these enhancements have yet to be announced.
OpenAI is also initiating a ChatGPT Pro Grant Program, designed to offer ten grants of ChatGPT Pro to medical researchers at prestigious institutions. The company aims to extend additional grant opportunities to a variety of fields in the future.
