Apple Meetings Reveal Serious Challenges Facing Siri

Published March 14, 2025

Recently, Apple has faced scrutiny for its slow progress regarding Siri and its artificial intelligence initiatives. The company announced delays for features that were initially promised last June, aimed at enhancing Siri's capabilities and helping Apple stay competitive in the AI landscape. However, during an internal meeting, it became clear that Apple is uncertain about when these updates will actually arrive.

Executive Remarks on Delays

In a recent all-hands meeting attended by Apple's Siri team, senior director Robby Walker discussed the serious situation regarding these delays. He referred to the current status as an 'ugly' development, expressing understanding for employees who may be feeling overwhelmed or disheartened due to the ongoing issues and Siri's less-than-stellar reputation. Walker pointed out that although there is a plan to integrate new Siri features into iOS 19, their inclusion is not guaranteed. "Just because it’s our target doesn’t mean we’re shipping then," he informed the team.

Team Priorities and Commitments

Walker elaborated on the team's commitments, noting that they are balancing efforts across various projects within Apple. "We have other commitments across Apple that are now potentially more urgent than the features we've deferred," he stated, highlighting the challenges the team is facing.

Internal Tensions and Unrealistic Expectations

The meeting also revealed tensions between the Siri team and the marketing department. Walker mentioned how the communications team aimed to promote features—like improved context understanding and functionality based on what users are currently viewing—that are not yet ready. This has resulted in higher customer expectations that only added to the challenges faced by the Siri team. To manage this situation, Apple has removed an advertisement featuring the iPhone 16 that displayed these unready features and has placed disclaimers on parts of its website regarding the release timeframes.

Leadership Accountability and Future Goals

While Apple has not given detailed public comments about the issues, Walker mentioned that senior executives like software chief Craig Federighi and AI head John Giannandrea are taking "intense personal accountability" for the ongoing situation. This predicament, characterized by a lack of new features, has drawn significant criticism as time has passed with only minor updates, such as a visually enhanced Siri interface.

Moving Forward with Improvements

Despite these setbacks, Walker reassured staff that some customers are eager not only for new features but also for an overall improvement in Siri. "We’re going to ship these features and more as soon as they are ready," he promised. He also commended the team for its hard work, expressing hope for achieving important progress together.
