Square Enix Sets Sights on Ambitious AI Integration in 2024

Published January 2, 2024

The renowned developer behind the iconic Final Fantasy series, Square Enix, is charting a bold course for its future, announcing plans to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) in a significant way. Company President Takashi Kiryu, who took the helm in June 2023, recently unveiled the company's strategy in his annual address, pointing to AI as a transformative tool that will redefine both the creation of content and the development process itself. This includes programming and spans across other functions like marketing. Kiryu foresees a digital-based shift in gaming, with physical media becoming increasingly obsolete.

Embracing AI for Creativity and Efficiency

The utilisation of AI is expected to enhance productivity within game development and also to pioneer new forms of engaging content. Even though the company has experimented with blockchain and non-fungible token (NFT) gaming projects, such as the Ethereum story art game 'Symbiogenesis,' AI seems poised to dominate their technology focus going forward.

Responding to Industry Concerns

Despite the excitement over AI's possibilities, the gaming community has expressed anxiety over the potential job losses that AI integration might bring. This backlash reflects concerns similar to those seen at other companies, like Microsoft, when it introduced AI tools for its Xbox platform. Square Enix, however, remains undeterred, pledging to continue research and development in AI, blockchain, and cloud gaming. Nonetheless, details about changes to the company's organizational structure in light of this strategic shift are not specified.

While the debate over generative AI's role within the gaming industry intensifies, Square Enix's aggressive stance suggests a future where AI could significantly influence how games are developed and experienced by players around the world.
