Slack Introduces AI Features to Tackle Message Overload

Published February 15, 2024

Slack has officially integrated generative AI capabilities to aid enterprise users in managing their digital communication workflows. These new features are designed to assist in navigating, abstracting, and querying content within Slack channels.

Advanced Search with AI

The highlight of these updates is an AI-driven search function that responds to natural language queries, allowing users to extract relevant details from their conversations more efficiently than through traditional search methods. Users can query the AI search bot about project details, team responsibilities, company policies, and even to unpack jargon and acronyms, without the potential embarrassment of having to ask colleagues directly.

Respecting Privacy

Slack has emphasized that while the AI has the ability to parse through workspace discussions to address queries, it maintains privacy standards by keeping personal conversations confidential. The AI's training does not involve customer data, and Slack's machine-learning technology is independently hosted on the company's own infrastructure.

Summarization and Recaps

Other AI-powered tools include automated recaps of channel exchanges and summary snippets of threaded conversations, especially beneficial for team members who are catching up after an absence or those new to a project.

Third-party Integrations

Slack continues to support third-party app integrations, facilitating complementary machine-learning features from various services such as Notion, PagerDuty, and Perplexity AI search bot.

Availability and Future Plans

The new Slack AI enhancements are currently offered as a subscription-based add-on for enterprise users and are available in English, with promises of expanded plans and additional language support on the horizon. These innovations aim to increase productivity by tapping into the collective intelligence within Slack, according to CEO Denise Dresser. Slack also hints at future AI integrations, including Salesforce's Einstein Copilot assistant.
