CES 2025: Gemini AI Coming to Google TVs

Published January 7, 2025

Television sets that operate on the Google TV system are about to receive a significant upgrade. The new feature, called Gemini, will be integrated into the Google Assistant voice-control system.

This exciting announcement was made during the ongoing CES technology conference in Las Vegas. Google showcased the revamped Google TV software, which will introduce more natural voice commands, enhanced content search capabilities, and improved integration with YouTube.

The Gemini upgrade is expected to roll out later this year, allowing users to engage in conversations with their TVs without needing to say "Hey Google" for each command, according to a report from Bloomberg. This hands-free interaction aims to make using the TV more seamless and intuitive.

To facilitate this voice command feature, Google is equipping compatible TV models with far-field microphones. This means that users can issue commands directly to the TV, rather than having to speak into a remote control.

This will be the first time that Google is implementing its Gemini AI across a range of third-party TV sets running its operating system, including popular brands such as Sony, Hisense, and TCL. Previously, some of the Gemini technology was featured on the Google TV streamer launched last year.

Google TV is positioned to compete with other major television operating systems that are available today. Notable competitors include platforms by Samsung, Amazon, and Roku.

At CES, both LG and Samsung also announced plans to feature Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant in their TVs for 2025, highlighting the growing trend of AI integration in home entertainment.

In addition to announcing the arrival of Gemini AI, Google previewed a new “always-on” mode for some of the TVs. This innovative feature will utilize sensors to detect when a user approaches, displaying useful information such as weather updates on the screen.

For instance, whenever the TV senses someone nearby, it might show the current weather conditions. TCL will be the first manufacturer to launch this always-on mode later this year, followed by Hisense in the following year.
