Alexa Devices Required to Report All Voice Recordings to Amazon Starting March 28

Amazon has announced the removal of a key privacy feature that allowed users of Alexa devices to opt out of sending their voice recordings to the cloud.

Starting on March 28 of this year, Echo device owners will no longer have the option to prevent their voice recordings from being sent to Amazon. Users must now choose between allowing the company to access all of their recordings or forgoing the use of Alexa altogether.

In a communication to Echo device owners, Amazon explained that this policy change is directly linked to the enhancement of Alexa's capabilities as it integrates more advanced features powered by generative AI.

Amazon stated, “As we continue to expand Alexa’s capabilities with generative AI features that rely on the processing power of Amazon’s secure cloud, we have decided to no longer support this feature.”

Reports indicate that this policy change may also affect the Voice ID feature, which informs users about personalized details like calendar events and music selections.

Despite the concerns surrounding user privacy, Amazon is attempting to reassure its customers regarding the security of the recordings now sent to the cloud. They emphasized that “Alexa voice requests are always encrypted in transit to Amazon’s secure cloud, which was designed with layers of security protections to keep customer information safe.”

However, there have been prior instances where Amazon mishandled voice recordings. In 2018, the company mistakenly sent a customer in Germany 1,700 recordings belonging to another user, labeling it a human error. This has now raised concerns about the trustworthiness of their security measures with the new policy in effect.
