Verizon and Nvidia Collaborate to Enhance AI Applications using Private 5G Networks
On Tuesday, Verizon Communications Inc announced a new solution created in partnership with Nvidia Corp that allows various artificial intelligence (AI) applications to operate effectively over Verizon's robust private 5G network, equipped with private Mobile Edge Compute (MEC).
The newly developed AI-powered private 5G platform stack is designed to serve as an infrastructure that can easily integrate with other systems, providing third-party developers with the flexibility they need to innovate. This setup also ensures that it can adapt to upcoming developments in AI computing and diverse AI and connectivity applications.
Verizon's solution can deliver these services either remotely through portable private network options or installed directly at a customer's location with a permanent private network setup.
The technology stack can support compute-intensive applications, which include large language models used in Generative AI, Vision Language Models, video streaming, broadcast management, Computer Vision (CV), Augmented/Virtual/Extended Reality (AR/VR/XR), as well as Autonomous Mobile Robots and Automated Guided Vehicles (AMR/AGV). It is also compatible with IoT devices.
Engineers at Verizon are set to begin demonstrations of this solution in early 2025.
Srini Kalapala, Senior Vice President of Technology and Product Development at Verizon, expressed that combining the strengths of its private networks with Verizon's leading position in global private MEC, along with Nvidia's advanced AI computing capabilities, will empower the creation of real-time AI applications. These applications are essential for organizations requiring security, ultra-low latency, and high bandwidth.
Ronnie Vasishta, Senior Vice President of Telecom at Nvidia, mentioned that Verizon's integration of Nvidia’s entire AI platform into its new solution marks a significant advancement, enabling enterprises of all sizes to accelerate their business goals using AI.
In the financial realm, Keybanc analyst Brandon Nispel downgraded Verizon's stock from Overweight to Sector Weight in October due to disappointing quarterly performance. He indicated that Verizon's potential acquisition of Frontier Communications Parent, Inc might limit its capacity to repurchase shares, which could yield an excess of 6%. Nispel also pointed out slower growth in postpaid phone net additions, combined with increased device subsidies resulting in higher costs.
Current stock performance: As of the latest update on Tuesday, VZ stock is down by 0.02%, trading at $40.87.
