Tesla Launches Full Self-Driving Technology in Mexico

Electric vehicle leader Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) has recently launched its full self-driving (FSD) driver assistance technology in Mexico, expanding access beyond its previous markets of the U.S. and Canada.

Recent Announcement: Tesla greeted Mexican drivers with a cheerful “¡Hola México!” on one of its social media profiles, confirming the availability of FSD in the country based on user reports.

Earlier, Tesla indicated plans to gradually extend FSD to select markets outside of North America, and this latest move is a step in that direction.

Important Note for Mexican Drivers: While this technology is branded as full self-driving, users must remain active and attentive while using it. This is crucial, as FSD does not render the vehicle fully autonomous.

In fact, Tesla advises drivers in newly eligible countries to proceed with caution. According to the company’s owner manual, “Because every country contains unique infrastructure, driving behaviors, and traffic patterns that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) must adapt to over time, it is essential for drivers using Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in newly eligible countries to be extra attentive and overly cautious. You must be ready to take over safely at any time.”

Future Plans: Looking ahead, Tesla has communicated its intention to roll out FSD in Europe and China by the first quarter of 2025, pending necessary regulatory approvals.

However, CEO Elon Musk has expressed concerns regarding regulatory hurdles, particularly in Europe where he described the landscape as a complicated “layer cake of regulations and bureaucracy.” This has made the anticipated rollout in Europe uncertain, contrary to earlier promises.

In China, the company faces additional challenges as well. Musk highlighted conflicts between U.S. and Chinese regulations, noting that while China prohibits the transfer of training data from Tesla vehicles back to the U.S., the U.S. does not permit the training of the software within China. This situation creates a “bit of a quandary” for the company.
