Apple Takes Stand in Google Antitrust Case

Published December 25, 2024

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is gearing up to take part in the forthcoming U.S. antitrust trial against Alphabet Inc.'s (GOOG) Google.

What is Happening: This action by Apple comes as the company aims to defend its multi-billion dollar revenue-sharing deals with Google, which are a major income source for Apple, as reported by various news outlets.

Recent court filings submitted in Washington indicate that Apple does not plan to create its own search engine to rival Google, regardless of the future of these financial arrangements.

In a statement, Apple expressed that "Google can no longer adequately represent Apple's interests, as the tech giant must now focus on defending itself against a significant push to break apart its business divisions."

Trial Preparations: As the legal proceedings approach, Apple is readying itself to present witnesses during the trial scheduled for April.

The aim of the prosecution is to demonstrate that Google must implement a series of measures, potentially including the sale of its Chrome web browser and possibly its Android operating system, to restore competitive balance in the online search space.

In 2022 alone, Apple's agreement with Google generated an estimated $20 billion in revenue.

Important Context: In response to the proposed remedies for Google's search distribution situation with the DOJ, Google highlighted the need for non-exclusivity and increased flexibility to mitigate regulatory pressures.

Last year, Eddy Cue from Apple justified the billion-dollar agreement with Google, stating it was the best option available, despite concerns over Google's privacy policies.

Stock Movement: On Tuesday, shares of Alphabet's Class A rose by 0.76%, closing at $196.11. Meanwhile, Class C shares increased by 0.81%, reaching $197.57, according to stock market data. Apple shares also advanced by 1.15% during regular trading, ending the day at $258.20, though they saw a slight dip of 0.039% in after-hours trading.
