Upcoming AI Features in iOS 18.2 Update

Published November 5, 2024

Following the release of iOS 18.1, which introduced the first Apple Intelligence features, Apple is anticipated to launch iOS 18.2 early next month. This update is expected to bring significant enhancements to Apple Intelligence.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, iOS 18.2 is likely to be released during the week of December 2. This timeline aligns with the company's announcement that its Apple Intelligence features will soon be available on devices in Australia.

Expanded Language Support

The upcoming iOS 18.2 update will not only introduce these AI features but will also expand language options to include various forms of English beyond just the American version.

This week, Apple rolled out the second developer beta of iOS 18.2. This version allows users to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus directly from the Settings menu, making it easier for those who want access to advanced features.

The initial round of Apple Intelligence capabilities was launched with the first beta of iOS 18.2, and with the latest beta, users can now enjoy additional features such as Genmoji, Image Playground, Image Wand, and Visual Intelligence.

Features for ChatGPT Integration

The ChatGPT section in the Apple Intelligence for Siri has been updated to show the limitations for free users and provides an option to upgrade to the paid ChatGPT Plus plan.

The release notes for the iOS 18.2 beta 2 also mention improvements to battery life and device temperature management. This update is especially important as several users of iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro have reported unexplained battery drain issues since the introduction of iOS 18. These complaints often note that battery drain occurs even in standby mode, indicating potential background activity that could be problematic.

Camera and Mirroring Upgrades

The iOS 18.2 beta also provides iPhone 16 users the ability to lock their auto exposure and auto focus settings with a simple press. This feature can be accessed through Settings > Camera > Camera Control.

Another feature in the upcoming update will enable users to utilize iPhone Mirroring while their iPhone's hotspot is shared with a Mac. Previously, using Personal Hotspot with a Mac disabled the ability to use the iPhone Mirroring feature simultaneously.

Regulatory Compliance for iPad

Additionally, the iOS 18.2 version for iPad will help Apple meet new regulatory requirements. For instance, users in the European Union will need to choose a Default Browser when opening Safari, in compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act. This change gives users the option to select their preferred web browser from a list when utilizing Safari.
