CES 2024 Unveils Transparent OLED TVs by LG and Samsung

Published January 8, 2024

At the premier consumer electronics showcase CES 2024, transparent televisions have taken center stage with both LG and Samsung unveiling their high-tech offerings. Despite the excitement, the Australian executives suggest that this innovation is presently geared more toward business-to-business interactions and the professional installation market.

Competing Launches by Tech Giants

Following Samsung's announcement of a transparent TV, LG responded with an early morning press conference revealing their transparent OLED Signature TV, aiming at the premium consumer segment. However, availability for purchase within the year remains uncertain, with LG's local management expressing skepticism.

An Evolving Prototype

The showcased LG TV, a 77-inch model, still seems to be in the refinement stages rather than being retail-ready. Its distinctive feature includes a contrast film behind the transparent OLED screen that can transform the TV to resemble a conventional black screen OLED with a remote control click.

Technical Innovations

Boasting new technology, the LG TV is set to include an LG A11 AI processor, enhancing its intelligence and performance. Sound is delivered through down-firing speakers, while LG's Zero Connect Box wirelessly streams video and audio content to the TV from up to 12 meters away. The TV also incorporates a custom widget section and runs a version of webOS tailored for transparent displays.

Visual Quality and Content Display

Although the LG OLED T lacks some technologies found in conventional LG OLED TVs, it doubles as a digital canvas for art and media when not in use. Content appears to hover over the background, offering a unique and atmospheric viewing experience. It includes special features like the T-Bar for displaying useful information and converts to full OLED quality at the touch of a button, thanks to the onboard α (Alpha) 11 AI processor.

Futuristic Viewing Experience

For those eager to adopt the latest in television technology, LG and Samsung's new transparent TVs represent a step into a futuristic viewing experience. While LG has tentative plans to roll out their Signature OLED T this year, a definitive release schedule is not yet announced.
