Galaxy S25 Takes a Leap Towards an Easily Replaceable Battery

Published February 12, 2025

Samsung has made significant improvements to the battery replacement process with its Galaxy S25 Ultra, as highlighted in a recent teardown by iFixit.

The teardown reveals that Samsung has refined the pull-tab mechanism that first appeared in the Galaxy S23. This enhancement makes replacing the battery much easier for users.

Under the new design, the battery is now equipped with four convenient sticky tabs that securely hold it in place. According to iFixit, these tabs can be effortlessly peeled up, allowing the battery to be removed quickly and without additional mess. The update contrasts sharply with past experiences of users who often needed specialized tools and techniques, including heat and plastic prying tools, just to access the battery.

With the Galaxy S25 Ultra, battery removal is described as a much more user-friendly experience, whether you're a professional technician or a regular phone owner trying to perform your own repairs. The process has been characterized as a “breath of fresh air,” enabling users to remove the battery with ease, without needing any solvents or complicated methods.

Samsung has also made strides in promoting self-repair options in the UK, having offered repair kits and tools since 2023. This initiative enables users to not only buy replacement batteries but also the necessary tools and instructions for repair.

iFixit has welcomed these enhancements in the Galaxy S25 Ultra as a significant development for sustainability and longevity in smartphones. This contrasts with previous criticisms directed at Samsung for its lack of support for self-repair, particularly after not renewing a partnership with iFixit.

While it is unlikely that smartphone designs will revert to models with removable back covers and easily swapable batteries, the industry seems to be moving towards making repairs simpler within the unibody designs that are currently popular. Achieving this goal without sacrificing durability or water resistance is essential.

The changes implemented by Samsung reflect an understanding of user needs and a commitment to enhancing the sustainability of its devices. With these efforts, Samsung is taking steps towards a more environmentally friendly approach while still delivering modern smartphone design.
