French AI Firm Mistral Reaches $6 Billion Valuation After Major Investment

Published June 11, 2024

French AI powerhouse Mistral has made headlines by raising a mammoth €600 million (around $644 million) in its most recent financing round. This investment skyrocketed the startup's worth to $6 billion, marking a tripling of its value since December and an overwhelming twenty-five-fold increase within a year.

Founded just over a year ago by a group of veterans from tech giants such as Meta and Google's DeepMind, Mistral has quickly positioned itself at the forefront of the booming open-source AI market. It now stands as possibly the top-valued open-source AI entity worldwide and takes the fourth spot among all AI companies.

The Series B round garnered support from a star-studded roster of investors including General Catalyst, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, and tech leaders Nvidia, Samsung, Salesforce, Cisco, and IBM. Mistral's CEO, Arthur Mensch, shared his gratitude on social media for the unwavering support the company has received, which paves the way for accelerating their roadmap and global expansion, particularly in the United States.

With the fresh influx of funds, Mistral is primed to break new ground in AI. The company has gained traction not just on proprietary AI models offered to businesses for their specialized needs, but also through their free, accessible open-source models like Mistral 7B and Mixtral 8x7B. These are released under the Apache 2.0 license, fostering a collaborative environment for developers and researchers.

Mistral's growth can, in part, be credited to its support of an open-source approach, as well as its strategic partnership with giants like Microsoft, which only strengthens its influence in the market. The capital boost will enhance the company's capabilities in computing, recruiting talent, and solidifying its leader status by investing in proprietary and open-source AI research and development.

Meanwhile, the renaissance of open-source AI has been further fuelled by contributions from major tech companies such as Meta, Google, Microsoft, and Apple. This is in conjunction with a broader trend of substantial funding rounds signaled by various AI startups looking to push the boundaries in generative AI technology.
