Nokia Jumps on AI-Focused Collaboration with Nvidia for Mobile Networks

Published February 21, 2024

Investors responded positively to news of Nokia Corp.'s latest venture, a strategic alliance with Nvidia Corp., aimed at integrating artificial intelligence within radio access networks (RAN). This partnership is geared towards enhancing the performance and efficiency of mobile networks, a move that has subsequently led to an increase in Nokia's stock value.

A Glimpse into the Collaboration

Nokia, a Finnish telecommunications giant, is working in conjunction with Nvidia to embed AI technology into RAN. Tommi Uitto, currently presiding as the president of mobile networks at Nokia, emphasized the crucial role of AI and this partnership in propelling the industry forward. He noted that this endeavor represents a significant step towards making Cloud RAN a practical option for network services.

Market Response to the Partnership

The announcement of the collaboration resulted in an uptick in Nokia's U.S. stock during premarket trading. Despite experiencing a downward trajectory in their stock performance over the preceding years, largely attributed to challenges in their network division, this recent development is a positive sign for the company. Conversely, Nvidia's shares exhibited a decline prior to the market opening, following a previous day's decrease.

Nokia's Utilization of Nvidia's Cutting-Edge Technology

Nokia plans to leverage Nvidia's Grace CPU Superchip, Layer 1 accelerator, and Cloud RAN applications, as well as incorporate Nvidia's chipsets specifically for artificial intelligence tasks. This strategic technology adoption aims to strip away complexities, thereby offering customers more agile Cloud RAN service deployments.

Ronnie Vasishta, Nvidia's senior vice president of telecom, expressed enthusiasm for the integration of Nvidia's high-performance computing solutions with Nokia's platform. He anticipates that this will lead to more efficient and capable Cloud RAN solutions, marking a transformative moment in the application of AI within the mobile network infrastructure.
