Apple Launches New Carbon Neutral Mac Mini

Published October 29, 2024

Apple has unveiled a new version of its Mac Mini, which is now half the size of its already compact predecessor. The new model measures just five by five inches, making it incredibly small for a desktop computer.

This latest Mac Mini features the newly released M4 chip, along with the M4 Pro chip. John's Ternus, Apple’s head of hardware, stated that this computer achieves impressive performance within an extraordinarily small form factor, thanks to the efficiency of Apple’s silicon and an innovative thermal design.

Notably, this new Mac Mini is also Apple’s first fully carbon neutral computer. Achieving this status required a significant 80% reduction in emissions associated with its manufacture, shipping, and user operation.

The first Mac Mini was introduced back in 2005, aimed at enticing users to switch from PCs by offering an Apple computer compatible with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Over the years, the Mac Mini has evolved to become smaller but has sometimes been overshadowed by Apple’s more prominent offerings, such as the MacBook line. In 2020, Apple transitioned the Mac Mini from Intel chips to its custom processors, first featuring the M1 chip, followed by an update to the M2 chip last year, and now it is sporting the latest M4 chip.

Similar to other Macs powered by Apple Silicon, the new Mac Mini is compatible with Apple’s AI features. A recent macOS update introduced an array of AI tools, including advanced writing functionalities that allow for text redrafting, with more features set to be released in the upcoming months.

Apple has marketed the Mac Mini as suitable for a diverse range of users, including students, aspiring creators, and small business owners. Additionally, it has gained popularity in niche areas such as home theaters and server farms.
