PlayStation Chief Emphasizes Importance of Human Touch in Gaming Amid AI Advances
Sony has expressed its concern that the video games industry must prioritize preserving the "human touch" in gaming experiences as artificial intelligence integrates into the sector.
In a recent interview with the BBC celebrating the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, Hermen Hulst, co-CEO of PlayStation, highlighted the need for developers to strike a balance between leveraging AI technology and maintaining the creativity and emotional depth that comes from human developers.
According to Hulst, AI has the potential to transform the gaming landscape significantly. He pointed out that during a time when studios are experiencing budget cuts and there is a trend toward greater industry consolidation, the idea that AI could automate substantial portions of game development raises concerns.
Nevertheless, Hulst remains optimistic, asserting that there will always be a demand for genuine human experiences in gaming. He explained, "I suspect there will be a dual demand in gaming: one for AI-driven innovative experiences and another for handcrafted, thoughtful content. Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial."
In addition to discussing the role of AI in gaming, Hulst also expressed his ambition to expand the reach of PlayStation's popular intellectual properties (IP) beyond gaming. He aims to bring more of these beloved stories to both television and film.
Sony’s recent adaptations have seen varying degrees of success. For example, the adaptation of The Last of Us for HBO has been well-received, while the Uncharted film and the Gran Turismo adaptation did not achieve the same level of success. However, there are high hopes for the upcoming God of War series on Amazon Prime and a Horizon adaptation for Netflix.
Hulst stated, "I am hoping to raise the PlayStation IP outside of just the gaming category and elevate it so it sits comfortably within the larger entertainment industry." This vision portrays a future where PlayStation content could reach wider audiences and create enduring connections with fans across different media.
