Yelp Incorporates AI Summaries; Will It Enhance User Experience?

Published January 30, 2024

Yelp has recently embraced the trend of implementing artificial intelligence, specifically large language models, into its service. On January 30, they broadcasted the introduction of 20 new enhancements to their platform. Touted by their Chief Product Officer Craig Saldanha, one notable addition includes AI-crafted business summaries aimed at providing users with quick and efficient insights into businesses suitable for their needs. By summarizing existing reviews into concise sentences, Yelp hopes to streamline the user's search process.

Efficiency or Redundancy?

The effectiveness of these new AI-powered summaries, however, is up for debate. Yelp provided an example where a summary highlighted a diner's cheeseburgers and affordability—an unsurprising attribute for a diner, raising concerns that these summaries might not offer new or valuable perspectives to potential customers.

The Role of AI in Yelp's Ecosystem

Yelp has acknowledged that AI has been part of its features for many years, focusing on simplifying decision-making for consumers. Despite these tools, users still face challenges such as navigating through irrelevant sponsored content, navigating community questions, and deciphering between genuine and ill-intentioned reviews. These issues have led to questions about Yelp's current effectiveness as a platform for reliable business recommendations.

Yelp's Evolution and Challenges

Yelp started as a repository for democratic feedback on local businesses, allowing users to share their honest experiences. This created a strong community of food enthusiasts, including the Yelp Elite Squad whose reviews are seen as reputable. However, with growth came challenges such as 'Yelp Elite' members leveraging their status for free meals or benefits, the rise of 'Yelp-bombing', and bizarre one-star reviews based on personal preferences or mishaps irrelevant to the general quality of establishments.

The Limitations of AI Summaries

The introduction of summaries generated by AI models may provide basic information, like whether an Italian restaurant serves pasta, but this may not accurately reflect the nuances of the dining experience. Yelp's underlying assumption is that aggregating multiple opinions equates to an objective measure of quality—yet this doesn't fully account for the subjective nature of restaurant experiences. No matter how many reviews are compiled, they cannot guarantee that individual customers will enjoy their visit, as personal tastes differ greatly. Ultimately, patrons must decide for themselves whether to dine at a particular restaurant, and AI-generated summaries might not contribute significantly to that decision.
