Google Delays Launch of Project Astra AI Technology Until 2025

Published October 29, 2024

Google has announced that it will not be releasing technology from Project Astra until at least next year. Project Astra is an extensive initiative aimed at developing artificial intelligence applications and agents that can understand and interact with the world in real time.

During Google’s Q3 earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai disclosed the projected timeline, stating, "Google is building out experiences where AI can see and reason about the world around you." He added, "Project Astra is a glimpse of that future. We’re working to ship experiences like this as early as 2025."

Project Astra includes a variety of technologies. These range from smartphone applications that can identify objects and environments to AI assistants capable of performing tasks on behalf of users. In a demonstration at the I/O developer conference in May 2024, Google showcased a prototype of Project Astra that could respond to inquiries about items visible through a smartphone camera, such as identifying a user’s neighborhood or naming parts of a broken bicycle.

Earlier this month, reports suggested that Google was planning to introduce a consumer-focused AI agent experience by December. This agent was expected to handle tasks like making purchases and booking flights. However, this timeline now appears uncertain unless this upcoming experience is independent of Project Astra.

Challenges in developing AI agents were highlighted by Anthropic, a company that recently launched one of the first large generative AI models capable of controlling applications and browsers. Despite their advancements, Anthropic has faced difficulties with executing basic functions, underscoring the complexities involved in creating effective AI agents.
