Samsung Appliances Set to Become Smarter with AI Technology

Enhancing the smart home experience is a challenging endeavor, but Samsung is making strides to simplify it for users. At the recent Samsung Unpacked 2025 event, the company introduced innovative Home AI features designed for its SmartThings platform, aiming to alleviate the complexities of daily living.

This advancement is part of Samsung's broader goal to create a more personalized, intelligence-driven AI experience that learns from user habits and applies this knowledge across various applications.

The new Home AI capabilities can detect specific activities, such as exercising or sleeping. For instance, if a user typically listens to loud music while working out but prefers silence at their desk, the system can suggest a routine to automatically mute the music when they transition from exercise to work.

Similarly, if a user falls asleep while watching TV, the system can turn off the TV and activate bedtime settings, which may include dimming smart lights.

This functionality is part of what Samsung refers to as the Ambient Sensing Foundation Model. This concept employs advanced sensor technologies—including occupancy, motion, and sound sensors—to recognize user activities and proactively optimize the environment accordingly.

Furthermore, Samsung plans to develop a 3D map of each user's home using Map View technology. This mapping will help identify which room or space the user occupies based on sensor data, allowing for customized activities and routines tailored to specific situations—all powered by generative AI.

This personalized approach enables users to explore their home layout within the SmartThings app and receive tailored routine suggestions.

To enhance the accuracy of its data collection, Samsung will utilize millimeter-wave (mmWave) and sound sensors instead of traditional smart sensors. These mmWave sensors can provide more precise detection of user activity, distinguishing between tasks such as sleeping, cooking, or moving throughout the house.

While having sensors monitor activities in the home raises valid privacy concerns, Samsung is emphasizing its commitment to data protection. To mitigate apprehensions regarding cloud-based storage, the company plans to store this information locally, helping users feel more secure about their data.
