ChatGPT Sees Surge in Daily Users Thanks to Ghibli-Style AI Images

Published April 1, 2025

SEOUL, April 1 -- ChatGPT, an innovative generative artificial intelligence (AI) service created by OpenAI, has recently experienced a significant increase in its daily active users (DAU). As of last Thursday, the DAU soared to an impressive 1.25 million, up from 1.03 million on March 10 and just 790,000 at the start of the month, based on data from industry analyst IGAWorks.

This remarkable growth can be attributed to OpenAI’s latest image-filtering tool that enables users to convert their personal photographs into illustrations that evoke the style of beloved Studio Ghibli films. Founded by the renowned animator Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has created iconic movies such as "My Neighbor Totoro," "Howl’s Moving Castle," and "Spirited Away," which have captivated audiences worldwide.

The introduction of this new image tool generated considerable excitement after OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, changed his profile picture on X, formerly known as Twitter, to a Ghibli-style version of himself. This move sparked widespread interest among users eager to try the feature for themselves.

Despite the enthusiastic response, the rise in popularity of AI-generated images has raised concerns regarding copyright issues and other technological challenges. In light of the increasing demand, Altman noted that OpenAI is planning to implement rate limits on the tool, humorously explaining, "Our graphic processing units are melting."

As ChatGPT continues to grow in popularity, it is clear that the fusion of advanced AI technology with the charm of Ghibli-style art has struck a chord with users, bringing a new level of creativity to the online space.
