IBM and SAP Collaborate on AI Solutions for Retail and Consumer Goods Sector

Published January 11, 2024

Two of the most recognized names in the technology and enterprise resource planning (ERP) sectors, IBM and SAP, are joining forces. Their goal is to provide cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for those in the consumer packaged goods and retail industries, aiming to refine essential processes such as supply chain, finance, sales, and customer service.

Integrating IBM's AI within SAP's Ecosystem

IBM will integrate its Watson AI and data platform -- an enterprise-level solution, complete with AI assistants -- into the SAP environment. This strategic move will birth new AI-driven solutions, both generative and traditional, that are tailored to simplify complex issues faced in direct store delivery operations and product portfolio management.

Enhancing Consumer Industry Operations with AI

Luq Niazi of IBM Consulting highlights that global and regional consumer industry organizations face challenges in commerce that require high-level insights. These insights, powered by AI, would enable proactive recommendations, helping businesses improve their performance and fulfill consumer expectations. The collaboration is set to expand on existing AI integrations within SAP solutions, delivering superior business value to customers.

Optimizing Logistics and Reducing Environmental Impact

Plans are in place to incorporate external data inputs, such as weather forecasts, traffic conditions, and local events, into SAP's Direct Distribution system. By doing so and applying AI analytics, consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies can optimize delivery routes, which could lead to cost savings and reduced carbon emissions. Additionally, real-time data could be used to adjust routes on-the-go, responding dynamically to local conditions.

Improving Store-level Decision-making

On a store-by-store basis, the intention is to offer tailored product recommendations and preliminary planning tools. These tools would consider historical sales data, forecasted demand, and the existing product mix to ensure the right assortment of products, balancing sales maximization with waste reduction. Further, automation of order processing is anticipated to streamline operations, bringing efficiency gains.

Enhanced User Experience and Operational Transformation

These solutions will be developed on SAP's Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), with IBM's Watson AI integrated via APIs. User experience is expected to benefit significantly, with warehouse planners, delivery personnel, and customer representatives utilizing Watson AI assistant for creating chatbots, powered by IBM's conversational search technology.

SAP's Commitment to AI Utility

EJ Kenney from SAP expressed excitement about the partnership with IBM. SAP understands the intricacies involved in managing direct store delivery. They aim to leverage AI's capabilities to help customers refine their last mile distribution, reduce waste, heighten customer satisfaction, and yield tangible business benefits in the dynamic consumer industry.
