OpenAI Set to Launch New AI Model Orion in December
OpenAI is preparing to unveil its newest artificial intelligence model, named Orion, in December. This model is anticipated to have a significant increase in power compared to its predecessor. Initially, Orion will be available to select partners rather than being released to the general public.
Details of the Launch: As reported by The Verge, OpenAI's plan for the Orion model is to restrict initial access to specific partners who can develop their own products and features with the new technology. This approach marks a departure from previous models like GPT-4o and o1, which had wider availability.
OpenAI's primary collaborator, Microsoft Corp., is reportedly getting ready to host Orion on its Azure cloud platform as early as November. Orion is considered a successor to GPT-4, although it remains unclear if OpenAI will label it as GPT-5. There may be changes in the release strategy, and neither OpenAI nor Microsoft has provided official comments on the matter.
According to an executive at OpenAI, the Orion model could be as much as 100 times more powerful than GPT-4. This model is distinct from the o1 reasoning model that was released in September. OpenAI aims to eventually merge its large language models (LLMs) to create advanced capabilities, potentially leading to artificial general intelligence.
In response to the report about Orion, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman commented, calling the information "fake news out of control." OpenAI has not responded to requests for additional comments.
The timing of this announcement is significant for OpenAI, especially following its recent record funding round of $6.6 billion and ongoing staff changes.
Industry Context: The artificial intelligence sector is experiencing a surge of activity, with companies like OpenAI and its competitors making substantial progress. Recently, Jack Altman, Sam Altman's brother, predicted that AI voice technology could become as impactful, if not more so, than AI text technology.
In competition, another AI company, Anthropic, has revealed an update to its AI model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, which allows for more human-like interactions with computers. Additionally, OpenAI's shift from a non-profit to a for-profit organization has complicated discussions with equity investors such as Microsoft, emphasizing the intense competition within the AI field.
Moreover, Nvidia Corp has launched a new AI model that reportedly surpasses both OpenAI's GPT-4o and Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet, raising the stakes in the ongoing AI race.
