ChatGPT Mobile App Enhances User Experience with Free Voice Chat Feature

Published November 22, 2023

The widely used ChatGPT app for both iOS and Android platforms has received a significant update that enhances user interaction without any cost. This upgrade introduces a voice chat feature that had been previously exclusive to paying subscribers but is now accessible to all users.

Introduction of Voice Chat to Free Users

In a move that marks a step towards inclusivity, OpenAI has rolled out the voice chatting capability to the users of the ChatGPT app on Android, iPhone, and iPad who choose not to subscribe to the service. The innovative feature allows users to engage in a conversational exchange with the AI-driven chatbot, making the interaction more natural and convenient.

Initially, upon its launch in September, OpenAI had limited this feature to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise account holders while hinting at a future release for free-tier accounts. The company has fulfilled this promise, making voice chat available to all users on the aforementioned mobile devices.

Rollout of ChatGPT Voice

The deployment of the ChatGPT Voice feature has already begun, though some users may experience a staggered availability as the feature continues to roll out. Those who have received the update will now find a headphone icon within the ChatGPT app that enables the voice chat functionality.

To activate voice chat, users must first launch the app, locate the headphone icon adjacent to the message input field, and grant the necessary permissions to the app. Following these simple steps, they can start engaging with ChatGPT in a more dynamic and auditory manner.

Customizable Voice Options

Users looking to personalize their ChatGPT voice experience can do so by visiting the app's settings. Within the Voice section, they have the choice of five distinct voice options—Ember, Juniper, Sky, Breeze, and Cove. Additionally, they can also adjust the chatbot's language settings to better suit their preferences, with an 'Auto-Detect' default feature to streamline the process.
