Apple Partners with Alibaba on AI Models for iOS Development

Published February 13, 2025

Apple has recently formed a partnership with Alibaba Group Holding to integrate Alibaba's artificial intelligence (AI) models into its iPhone offerings. This news has stirred excitement among Chinese app developers, who are eager to explore the opportunities this collaboration presents as Apple prepares for its upcoming conference in Shanghai next month.

The collaboration with Alibaba could significantly benefit local developers and Apple, especially as the tech giant faces challenges in the Chinese market due to uncertainties surrounding its AI capabilities. According to regulations in China, any AI model included in Apple Intelligence, an important feature expected in new iPhone models, must receive approval for public use.

The South China Morning Post reported this week that Apple has reached an agreement to use Alibaba's Qwen AI models for its app development in mainland China. Currently, Apple Intelligent utilizes models from OpenAI in international markets.

The announcement of the Alibaba partnership has brought optimism to the Chinese iOS developer community, leading to speculation that Apple Intelligence could launch in China before the Shanghai conference on March 25.

Albert Li, an app developer based in Beijing, expressed his enthusiasm for the Qwen model, calling it "ideal for independent developers like me." Li has been working on a notebook app for iOS since late 2023. He believes that the integration of Alibaba's AI technology will simplify the process of enhancing his app with new features.
