Meta and IBM Spearhead AI Alliance with Over 50 Entities

Published December 5, 2023

Meta Platforms, Inc., commonly referred to as Meta, and the tech giant International Business Machines (IBM) have successfully established an extensive AI Alliance. This coalition is comprised of more than 50 entities which include AI companies and esteemed research institutes. The alliance's core mission is to advocate for an open and transparent AI ecosystem.

Convergence in AI Innovation

The AI Alliance has enlisted a number of high-profile members like Intel and Oracle, along with the National Science Foundation. As covered by The Wall Street Journal, the group's objective is to nurture an environment conducive to 'open innovation and open science' within the realm of artificial intelligence.

The majority of the alliance's participants are strong supporters of open-source technology. This model promotes technology that is openly accessible and underscores a tradition of collaboration across large-scale tech companies, academic circles, and individual programmers.

IBM and Meta's Joint Venture

The partnership framework for the AI Alliance was initiated by IBM and Meta in August. DarĂo Gil, a senior vice president at IBM and the director of IBM Research, expressed concern over the limited narratives surrounding AI, saying, "We did not feel that it reflected the diversity of the ecosystem that is making this AI moment possible."

Despite some historical setbacks, such as the challenges faced by IBM's Watson system, Gil revealed that IBM's new Watsonx system represents a renewed AI platform. Similarly, Meta is striving to secure its position in the competitive AI market with the introduction of its open-source AI system, the Llama 2 AI model.

Shifting to Decentralized AI Dependencies

The establishment of the AI Alliance aligns with the current market trend where businesses are actively searching for multiple AI product vendors. This diversification helps mitigate risks that come with relying on a single provider. The alliance is positioned to facilitate a more dispersed AI infrastructure, an objective staunchly supported by Gil.
