AFIMSC Drives AI Advancements at Industry Forum

Published February 23, 2024

On the 20th and 21st of February, over 120 attendees from various sectors, including industry, academia, and government, convened at the downtown campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio for a special event. It was the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center (AFIMSC) Artificial Intelligence Industry Forum, orchestrated with the collaboration of AFWERX and designed to ignite a synergy of ideas and strategies dealing with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

Opening Insights and Challenges

The forum was kickstarted by Major General John Allen, the AFIMSC commander, who emphasized the importance of AI in the Air Force's future endeavors. Attendees were encouraged to participate actively in the discussions that followed, where experts detailed the current hurdles facing mission areas such as infrastructure, emergency response, and security operations.

Role of AI in Enhancing Air Force Operations

Gerald O’Brien, a lead official within the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, highlighted AI's potential to transform existing infrastructure into smarter, more efficient systems. The facilitators of the event strived to matchmake innovative AI solutions with Air Force requirements, aiming to see these solutions come to fruitful execution.

Collaborative Approaches to AI Adoption

Dustin Dickens, the innovation program manager for AFIMSC, acknowledged that while AI can reshape the Air Force's operations landscape, realizing its full potential requires collaboration with industry and academic partners. The second day's one-on-one sessions were especially crucial for delving deeper into specific mission challenges and discussing possible solutions.

Future Vision and Ongoing Collaboration

The event also provided an overview of the broader mission of AFIMSC and imparted AI-related knowledge from UTSA and AFWERX specialists. Tom George, a corporate leader, praised the forum for its comprehensive view of AI within the Air Force. Further emphasizing the point, James Foutz of AFWERX explained the mutual benefits of industry and military engagement, noting that such interactions are vital for understanding and solving complex problems. The AFIMSC is committed to hosting innovation events throughout the year, fostering a collaborative environment between military personnel, industry experts, and academic visionaries.
