Hamas Targets Trump in Khan Yunis Propaganda Event

Published February 15, 2025

The political tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict took a significant turn recently during a Hamas-organized event in Khan Yunis. This gathering was highlighted by the release of three hostages, but it was also used as a platform for propaganda aimed at U.S. President Donald Trump.

Messages on Display

As part of the event, several banners were showcased in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. One prominent message read "no migration except to Jerusalem," which many interpret as a direct jab at Trump’s controversial plans for resettling Gazans in neighboring Jordan and Egypt.

Trump's idea to relocate Gazans sparked widespread disapproval across the Arab world, making the banner's message particularly pointed in this context. Other notable slogans included "We Crossed Over Swiftly," referring to Hamas's notorious October 7 invasion of Israel, an attack that was marked by significant violence and the taking of over 250 hostages.

Additionally, the banners displayed names and images of Israeli towns attacked during this assault alongside the Hamas logo.

Symbolism and Propaganda Tactics

Another banner captured the sentiment of the gathering with the phrase "O Jerusalem, Bear Witness: We Are Your Soldiers." This conveys a strong sense of duty and allegiance to Jerusalem, aligning with the historical and emotional significance of the city for many Palestinians.

Hamas has a history of leveraging hostage releases for propaganda purposes. Past ceremonies have showcased released captives in front of large, often hostile crowds, turning what should be private moments into public spectacles. This tactic not only aims to bolster the group's image within Gaza but suggests a level of support among the local population.

Concerns Over Hostage Safety

The conditions of these hostage release events have raised alarms. Organizations like the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have expressed growing concern over the safety and dignity of the hostages during these public displays. They argue that releases should be handled privately to ensure the wellbeing of the individuals involved.

The ICRC has stated its readiness to facilitate future hostage release operations and emphasized the importance of maintaining the ceasefire agreement to enable more humanitarian assistance for Gaza.
