Gemini's New Collaboration Features Enhance Creative Projects

Published March 18, 2025

Google has unveiled exciting new features for its Gemini assistant, specifically designed to facilitate creative collaboration. The standout feature is called Canvas, which utilizes a split-screen setup. On one side, users can engage in conversation with Gemini, while on the other, they can see their edits and changes reflected in real-time.

The main goal of Canvas is to simplify the editing process. Instead of endlessly scrolling through the chat to identify and copy parts of outputs that need adjustments, users can highlight the specific text they want to change on the right-hand side. By communicating the desired adjustments to Gemini, the assistant will modify that section accordingly and update the document. This eliminates the need to generate a new document or stitch together additional paragraphs manually.

Making revisions to responses generated by large language models like Gemini can often be tedious. With the new Canvas feature, this task is expected to become more user-friendly and efficient.

Enhancements for Programming Projects

In addition to text editing, Canvas also supports programming tasks. Users can view code on the right side of the screen while conversing with Gemini to clarify, revise, or debug the code. Furthermore, it allows for a visual representation of HTML or React code, such as displaying what an email subscription form might look like. Any requested changes will update the preview instantly, enabling users to experiment with various designs swiftly.

Using Gemini’s Updated Features

To access these new capabilities, individuals must be subscribers of either Gemini or Gemini Advanced. By simply clicking the Canvas button in the prompt bar, users can start working with these features. It is essential to note that Google promotes these updates as tools for collaboration, but it specifically refers to collaboration with the Gemini assistant itself. If users wish to share their content, they have the option to export it to Google Docs with a single click.

Introducing Audio Overview for Document Processing

The update also brings a feature known as Audio Overview, which originates from NotebookLM. This feature transforms written documents into podcast-style audio discussions. It serves a similar purpose to other summarization tools but presents information in an easily digestible audio format with two AI hosts discussing the material.

NotebookLM users have found this feature particularly helpful as it allows them to multitask while engaging with information. To utilize Audio Overview, users need to upload their documents to Gemini and then select the suggestion chip that appears.
