OpenAI Senior Advisor Resigns, Raises Concerns Over AGI Preparedness
Another prominent figure has left OpenAI, expressing serious doubts about the readiness for artificial general intelligence (AGI) within the organization and other AI companies.
Recent Developments: Miles Brundage, a senior advisor dedicated to AGI Readiness at OpenAI, announced his resignation through a blog post published on Thursday. This departure is part of a trend of notable exits from the AI research organization.
In his statement, Brundage noted, "Neither OpenAI nor any other frontier lab is ready, and the world is also not ready," highlighting his concerns about the industry's overall preparedness for the challenges that advanced AI technologies may bring.
Brundage's resignation adds to a growing list of significant exits from OpenAI, which includes former Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and essential members of the company's safety team, such as Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, leaders of the superalignment team.
Background and Future Plans: Throughout his six years at OpenAI, Brundage made important contributions to the organization, including shaping its deployment practices and initiating an external red teaming program alongside the development of system evaluation cards. Post-departure, he intends to establish a nonprofit organization that will focus on AI policy research and advocacy.
Despite OpenAI's successful fundraising efforts, having raised over $6.5 billion at a valuation of $157 billion, Brundage voiced his worries regarding the AI industry's commitment to safety and security. He specifically pointed out the potential catastrophic risks posed by advanced AI systems.
Brundage emphasized, "I think AI capabilities are improving very quickly and policymakers need to act more urgently," stressing the growing need for improved regulations and safety frameworks across the AI sector.
