Alibaba Cloud Launches Serverless Solution Elevating AI Capabilities for Businesses

Published January 31, 2024

On January 30, 2024, Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of the Alibaba Group, announced a groundbreaking serverless version of its Platform for AI (PAI)-Elastic Algorithm Service (EAS). This new offering is designed to facilitate a more cost-effective approach for model deployment and inference, extending its utility to both individuals and enterprises.

Enhancements and Integration

Alibaba Cloud also unveiled the integration of its advanced vector engine technology within a broader range of product services, including its data warehouse Hologres, along with the search services Elasticsearch and OpenSearch. This was part of the company's announcements made during its AI & Big Data Summit in Singapore. The goal is to simplify access to large language models (LLMs) for businesses, enabling the creation of bespoke generative AI applications.

Cost-efficient and Scalable Serverless Platform

The new PAI-EAS platform operates on a serverless infrastructure, allowing users to scale computing resources according to demands without the hassles of managing physical or virtual servers. This serverless solution bills customers solely based on their actual usage, yielding up to a 50% reduction in inference costs, unlike traditional pricing models. Initially available for image generation model deployment, Alibaba Cloud plans to expand the platform's capabilities in March 2024 to support additional models, including open-source LLMs and those from Alibaba's ModelScope.

Empowering Innovation with AI

Alibaba Cloud's dedication to innovation extends to providing tools for model training and image generation. With PAI-Artlab, designers have access to a robust platform for crafting professional-grade designs. This initiative is expected to propel creativity, allowing for rapid creation of designs for applications ranging from home interiors to gaming scenarios. While PAI-Artlab is currently available in mainland China, plans are underway for its availability in Singapore.

Vectored Future for Data Analytics

Alibaba Cloud's proprietary vector engine technology has played a pivotal role in enhancing the performance and capabilities of various database solutions, such as PolarDB, AnalyticDB, and Lindorm, by providing an optimal environment for AI functionalities like similarity comparisons and semantic analysis.

Driving Digital Transformation

From large corporations to startups, numerous global customers are leveraging Alibaba Cloud's state-of-the-art technologies to fuel their digital transformation endeavors. By making their proprietary LLMs available to the global community, Alibaba Cloud is facilitating a powerful computing ecosystem for diverse AI innovations tailored to the specific needs within different sectors.

Real-World Impact with AI

Highlighting real-world applications, Haleon, a leading consumer health firm, has introduced an AI-powered nutritionist to the Chinese market, employing Alibaba Cloud's LLM and RAG technology, to offer precise nutritional advice. Additionally, the Japanese startup rinna has leveraged Alibaba Cloud's LLMs for creating its Nekomata models, advancing the processing of Japanese text.

Established in 2009, Alibaba Cloud offers a comprehensive suite of cloud services worldwide and has been recognized as a leading IaaS provider globally and in the Asia Pacific region by IDC and Gartner.
