Meta’s Project Waterworth: A Revolutionary Undersea Cable Initiative

Published February 19, 2025

Meta is launching an innovative undersea cable project known as Project Waterworth, which is set to connect five continents over a staggering distance of more than 50,000 kilometers. This ambitious plan aims to create the world’s longest undersea cable system, incorporating cutting-edge technology to enhance high-capacity connectivity across various regions such as the United States, India, Brazil, and South Africa.

The primary objective of Project Waterworth is to spur economic growth, promote digital inclusion, and foster technological progress in essential areas. For instance, in India, where the digital infrastructure is rapidly evolving, this initiative will significantly accelerate advancements and bolster the country’s aspirational goals for a robust digital economy. Submarine cables are the backbone of global digital networks, managing over 95% of international data traffic across oceans. They are crucial for facilitating smooth digital communications, streaming video content, conducting online transactions, and more.

This multi-billion-dollar endeavor will enhance the scale and reliability of global digital networks through the establishment of three new ocean corridors with high-speed connectivity. This connectivity is vital for driving artificial intelligence (AI) innovation globally. Over the past ten years, Meta has collaborated with various organizations to drive advancements in infrastructure, successfully building more than 20 undersea cables. These include industry-leading cables equipped with 24 fiber pairs, a significant improvement over the conventional eight to 16 fiber pairs found in many other systems.

With Project Waterworth, Meta is positioned at the forefront of innovative technology, particularly in the realms of AI, which is transforming numerous sectors, including infrastructure. As AI continues to revolutionize industries and societies around the globe, the capacity, resilience, and global reach of these networks are crucial for supporting advanced infrastructure. Project Waterworth ensures that the benefits of AI and emerging technologies can reach everyone, regardless of their location or working environment.
