Nvidia's Project DIGITS: A $3,000 AI-Powered Desktop
Nvidia has introduced an innovative desktop computer named Project DIGITS at CES 2025, showcasing its latest technology.
This machine is powered by the new "Blackwell" AI chip developed by Nvidia, representing a significant step in AI computing.
Project DIGITS will retail for $3,000 and is equipped with a newly designed central processor (CPU), co-created by Nvidia and MediaTek, aimed at enhancing performance in AI tasks.
Collaboration with MediaTek
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang highlighted the collaboration with MediaTek during his address, mentioning that MediaTek is set to offer the CPU they developed together, making it available to a wider audience.
Huang explained, "Now they could provide that to us, and they could keep that for themselves and serve the market. And so it was a great win-win." This partnership is part of Nvidia's strategy to create efficient products to compete with dominant players like Intel and AMD in the CPU market.
Targeting AI Developers
While Project DIGITS is not intended for mass-market consumption at this time, it is tailored specifically for AI developers who commonly use Linux-based operating systems.
Nvidia’s operating system for Project DIGITS is designed to cater to these developers, and Huang affirmed that they are the primary target audience for this new desktop.
Future Plans for the Desktop CPU
Huang remained somewhat vague about Nvidia's future plans for the desktop CPU, saying he would share more details later but indicating that there are indeed plans in the works.
In response to questions from analysts, he mentioned that Nvidia aims to create a bridge between Linux, which many AI developers prefer, and Microsoft’s Windows, a popular choice among consumers.
Innovative Technology Support
The goal is to utilize a Microsoft technology known as Windows Subsystem for Linux, which allows a single computer to run both operating systems simultaneously.
Huang expressed confidence in making this technology a mainstream option, stating, "We will support it with all the things that we do to support professional and high-quality software, and the PC manufacturers will make it available to end users." This commitment reflects Nvidia's ambition to revolutionize the computing experience for both developers and general consumers while expanding the possibilities of AI in everyday tasks.
