Google Introduces Gemini Widgets for iPhone to Challenge Siri
Google has unveiled the Gemini app for iOS and iPadOS, now featuring several lockscreen widgets designed to enhance access to its AI assistant. According to recent reports, this update brings a total of six widgets, allowing users to quickly engage with specific functions of the Gemini app.
This move appears to be a strategic effort by Google to attract iPhone and iPad users away from Apple's Siri, encouraging them to utilize Gemini instead of OpenAI's ChatGPT when interacting with large language models. Moreover, Google has been promoting Gemini through Apple-focused tech podcasts, suggesting a targeted approach to gain traction in the Apple ecosystem.
In light of Apple's slow progress in upgrading Siri to compete with leading AI solutions, reports indicate that a significant overhaul of Siri is still several years away. Google's initiative to familiarize users with Gemini during this waiting period seems well-timed and deliberate. It is also speculated that Apple might incorporate Gemini as an additional resource for its AI functionalities.
As for the widgets, each offers unique features:
- Type prompt: Provides immediate access for users to type questions.
- Talk Live: Enables users to converse or brainstorm ideas with Gemini.
- Open mic: Allows quick access to set reminders, create calendar events, and more.
- Use camera: Facilitates taking photos and asking Gemini related questions.
- Share image: Lets users select images for informative feedback or creative inspiration.
- Share file: Empowers users to share files for further information or queries.
Previously, Google launched a standalone Gemini app for iOS back in November, moving it out of the main Google search app to provide a more focused user experience.
