Published January 24, 2025

OpenAI’s ChatGPT service has successfully resumed operations after experiencing technical difficulties that caused "elevated error rates" for users. This incident was first reported by OpenAI shortly before 4 AM Pacific Time, with a message stating, "We are currently experiencing elevated error rates in the API Application Programming Interface. We are currently investigating."

About thirty minutes later, users received a positive update: "The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented … we are monitoring the results." Just thirteen minutes after that, a further announcement confirmed, "This issue has now been resolved. Between 3:33 AM and 4:23 AM PST, customers experienced elevated error rates on ChatGPT and the API."

However, at 5:12 AM, new problems arose as the service reported it was experiencing elevated error rates again. OpenAI issued another statement saying, "We are currently investigating." Many loyal users took to social media to express their frustration and concern about the service disruptions.

Then, at 5:43 AM, there was a hopeful update: "We have identified the root cause of this issue, and are currently working to implement a fix." Time continued to pass, and at 6:34 AM, the service reassured users that they were still working on a resolution.

Finally, at 7:09 AM, users could celebrate as it was announced, "A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results." By 8:05 AM, just as many Californians were starting their workday, the situation was clarified: "This issue has now been resolved. Between 4:23 AM and 7:10 AM PST, customers experienced elevated errors on ChatGPT."

The day before the outage, OpenAI had issued a warning that some users might experience login issues on their platform at platform.openai.com.
